Quote Rotator
Quote Rotator is a wordpress widget that allows the user to input quotes (or other content) and cycle through the information.
Version 3.4.2
- Added ability to edit quotes. (seggestion from rustykruffle.com)
- Added widget option to choose whether quotes are in order or random. (seggestion from rustykruffle.com as well as andrewpitchford.com/)
- Added field to enter the author of the quote. (suggestion from andrewpitchford.com/)
Version 2.4.2
- With assistance from Dan Coulter, found variables clashing with other program. With Dan’s suggestion I placed JS in class and now problem solved. Thanks again Dan.
- Added option to choose font size.
Version 2.3.2
- This version will pull quotes randomly from database. Prevents visitors seeing same quotes over and over when you have a lot of quotes. Thanks for suggestions from Mark (http://www.madmapper.co.za/).
Version 2.2.2
- Now able to enter quotation marks without trouble. If there are any quotes in the database that have double quotes then you will have to manually change them to single quotes.
Version 2.2.1
- Changed database creation to include table prefix
Version 2.2
- Added option to choose time it take for fade.
Version 2.1
- Fixed Database creation issues. This time for real. Sorry. :0
Version 2.0
- Fixed database creation issues.
- Convert database column ‘quote’ from varchar to text.
- Convert plugin to class.
- Added option to track plugin version.
Version 1.0
- First release.
I like this, though I think it needs just two small things to make it perfect.
An option for random/rotate in order
The ability to edit the quotes once they’ve been added
Elsewise, this is a very well done plugin with a nice admin interface and easy to use options. Thank you for your time and effort
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:29 pmThanks, Luke, for a great plugin! I’m on my way over to donate now.
October 26th, 2007 at 10:03 amLove the plugin! I have one comment/suggestion… Is there a way to size the quote display field so that it is always as large as the longest quote? I liked having the QR widget near the top of my sidebar, but because the length of my quotes vary, that causes the other widgets to “dance” every time the quote changes.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:27 pmThank you for this plugin!
October 31st, 2007 at 6:26 amI would like to know if there’s a time delay variable in there anywhere. I’d like to change quotes every 30 seconds or longer.
Great plug in…. is there a way to change the color of the text?
November 1st, 2007 at 6:27 pmhow do u make the quotes in random? thanks
November 5th, 2007 at 12:19 amA nifty plugin, but causes me a little grief because it causes my page to fail xhtml markup validation.
I also would like to see the font-size in fluid ‘em’ or ‘%’ rather than ‘px’ (or just left out of the widget so that I could style myself without the widget echoing ‘px”)
November 8th, 2007 at 3:05 pmRusty,
November 9th, 2007 at 12:12 amGood suggestion. I will look at the validation. I will add in the next version the option to choose size and unit as well.
Hi. And what about the option that anybody can take a little script for display my quotes in their site or blog?
November 9th, 2007 at 2:20 pmManuel,
November 9th, 2007 at 2:54 pmI will look into that.
Hi Luke Howell,
Really good plugin, but how can i manually show the quotes in sidebar.php
Please answer to my mail reus@vtr.net
Thanks
November 11th, 2007 at 9:24 pmHey Luke,
Great app, I’m working on a site for a friend at the moment and she wants quotes so this is a great solution. Just one question though, how can I insert the app into the sidebar manually, without using the Sidebar Arrangement section of the Wordpress Presentation admin. The reason I ask is because I have my own custom theme which I have hard coded the sidebar.
Many Thanks
Neil

November 13th, 2007 at 1:04 pmI think this plug-in would be perfect for my website - but I do NOT want to access/implement this using the widget feature to remodel my sidebar. Is there a way to cut and paste some code directly into my sidebar.php file? Thanks! -Brad
Hi, wondering if Quote Rotator will work with Wordpress 2.3?
Thanks!
November 14th, 2007 at 7:49 pmHi,
very good plugin!
how can i manually show the quotes in sidebar.php?
Please answer to my mail..
Thanks a lot!
November 15th, 2007 at 11:19 amEric,
November 16th, 2007 at 11:43 pmyes, it works with 2.3
How do I enable this quote rotator - what code do I put in the sidebar? There is mention of what to do in the readme text or on this webpage. Thanks.

November 20th, 2007 at 3:01 pmjust the same as all other widgets.
I get a stack overflow on line 576. Any ideas?
November 20th, 2007 at 10:30 pmHello, I really don’t know why but the Quote Rotator shows up blank on my website.
November 30th, 2007 at 11:25 amHeya Luke,
Thanks for your hard word on this widget. Two more suggestions. Im migrating from a php quote rotator and have hundreds of quotes, A bulk dump/import might be nice.
Secondly the quotes cycle through too fast for me - Is there a line in the code with the display time?
December 5th, 2007 at 10:44 amthanks!
kris
phidelity,
I will look into bulk import.
For your second question, there is option under widget option that allows you to change the display time.
December 7th, 2007 at 5:56 pmJust updated to latest version and now the timing is off -doesn’t correspond to number of seconds - and it always starts with the first quote in the list even if I have random selected is there somewhere to download 3.5.2 so I can reinstall that one.
December 12th, 2007 at 7:25 pmNever mind. I figured it out. Works great, thanks.
December 12th, 2007 at 9:54 pmI’m seeing the quote show up, but when it fades, it doesn’t come back. Any suggestions?
December 13th, 2007 at 10:55 amGreat plugin. One suggestion… is it possible to somehow make it take up a consistent amount of space on the sidebar?
Currently, when ads rotate in of different lengths, it moves the sidebar up and down, which looks a little cludgey.
Keep up the great work!!

Wow, great plugin man. This solves a ton of different problem at once. Anyway I could add a link to manually rotate back and forth through the quotes (instead of having them move on their own?)
December 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 pmThanks! Very good plugin!
December 31st, 2007 at 9:34 amI downloaded quote rotator, added some quotes, but when I look at my blog, all I see under Quote Rotator is loading quotes. The plugin is active.
What am I missing?
January 1st, 2008 at 1:23 pmI’m sort of in the same boat as you are Curt - but I don’t see the plugin on my site/blog!
January 1st, 2008 at 10:57 pmHy! Great Job.
But how can I make quotes to fade-out? Not only fade-in…
Sorry for my English…
Thx!
January 2nd, 2008 at 3:40 pmQuote rotator is very good but I have (stupid, I think) problem with it. It’s all about how to put some quotes with latin symbols? When I put some polish letters the ??? are the only thing I can see on the site. Please, help!
January 2nd, 2008 at 5:06 pmSame thing as Curt: QuoteRotater just says: “Loading quotes …” on the page. Even with wp-cache disabled.
January 3rd, 2008 at 1:52 pmCaraM–
After activating the plugin, you will need to put the widget in for it to show up oin your website……
Go to Presentation->Widgets
The widget name is Quotes. Drag it to your sidebar, and put it where you want it to show up.
January 4th, 2008 at 1:14 amI have a suggestion for anyone who has activated the plugin and added quotes but cannot see it on the website. If you have a sidebar.php file, you’ll need to be sure that widgets are allowed, with a command like
In that statement, you need to indicate which sidebar (assuming you have more than one) the widget should appear…in the above case, it’s sidebar 3.
Luke, there is one problem with the widget (but it’s otherwise awesome! I can’t stop it from rotating more quotes. What if I only wanted one quote per page refresh (or sidebar refresh)? I can’t stop it from loading more quotes after the first one and it makes the web page “stutter” as each one loads.
January 9th, 2008 at 1:04 amHrm. I’m looking to hardcode the call-up for this plugin because I don’t want it in my sidebar. Any chance there is some simple code to do this?
January 10th, 2008 at 1:00 amGreat plugin Luke,
January 16th, 2008 at 11:00 ambut I’m using a theme that doesn’t support widgets. Could you give me a heads-up on how to get the plugin work in a hardcoded sidebar? Is there a function that I need to call ? I haven’t found anything on the wordpress site on how to use widgets in a hardcoded sidebar.
Very nice plugin. I do have a couple of suggestions. As I’m trying to introduce 2,000+ quotes (actually taglines) I found a couple of usability suggestions:
- Give the user the option of having the Add Quote form at the top of the page, or conversely, add an “Add Quote” link that takes you to the bottom of the page.
- Maybe have a way of adding a list of quotes as txt file, or just a textbox where you would add a list of quotes. It might also be a csv import, or comma/tab separated txt file…
- Also, give the user the option of say display just one different quote per page reload as opposed to the Ajax rotation.
Thanks for a great widget/plugin.
Cheers,

OK, I guess I have a super stupid question. I’ve read everything that came with the download and this page but I cannot see where it is I actually add the quotes or content I want rotated. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks!
January 27th, 2008 at 2:58 amYou can input the Quotes at Manage > Quote Rotator. (The same page you use to find the Post interface.
Hope that helps,
Humberto
January 27th, 2008 at 6:57 amI was also wondering how I might bypass the widget and code this into my template for more flexibility.

May 20th, 2008 at 8:21 pmI’ve been using this widget and it is really great … I get a lot of compliments about it, wondering where I got it, etc.
One thing … I just upgraded to WP 2.5.1 and this widget now appears to no longer work properly.
Have you tested it to make sure it’s still compatible?
Thanks!
May 22nd, 2008 at 9:49 amHello & Goodday to you.
The plugin is perfect for our needs. However is there a code we can insert into the header so when the header refreshes a new quote will show up? We would like to use it in the header and not as a widget. Please answer via email when you have the time. Bravo for excellent work.

I have been using your quote plugin for quite a while and it has been working great. Today, however I cannot get the quote to show up in my sidebar. The title is there, and I can change the name on that. I tried removing and replacing it in my sidebar, but it didn’t change the actions of the plugin. It shows the quotes loading notice, but the space remains blank. I upgraded my akismet, global translator, and a couple of other plugins at the same time, but wouldn’t think that would effect this one. I am using WP 2.5.1
Any help would be appreciated.
June 3rd, 2008 at 9:06 amI have installed this plugin and it works wonders!! Except, I can’t insert Chinese Quotes, they show up as ?????? in the admin area and side widget, could you tell me how to fix this please?
